Napa and Sonoma counties are home to dozens of American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), each with a distinct microclimate, topography and soil that lends itself to the production of certain types of wine. A wine must be made with at least 85% of its grapes from a single AVA in order to use that AVA name on its label.
